Middlesex University Mauritius and Université des Mascareignes are jointly offering a DIES National Multiplication Training (NMT) programme for participants from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius. The programme responds to the enactment of reforms in the Mauritius Higher Education Act 2017 that has introduced substantial changes to public and private HEIs operations for programme accreditation and audit requirements. The reforms are aligned to Vision 2030, wherein improving the quality of international higher education is paramount as Mauritius positions itself as a developing knowledge hub in Africa.

The DIES NMT programme is part of the National Multiplication Trainings scheme coordinated and implemented by The University of Potsdam, Germany since 2017. “National Multiplication Training” forms part of the German “Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies” (DIES) Programme, which is jointly coordinated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The training programme is intended to equip academic staff and quality assurance personnel with the foundations of effective quality management systems in higher education. The main objectives are to:

  • Enhance participants knowledge, skills, and competencies in accreditation, quality audits, and curriculum internationalisation.
  • Evaluate the preparedness of the existing Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) systems within the Higher Education Institution (HEI) to meet quality requirements, with a specific focus on program accreditation and audit requirements.
  • Support participants in the implementation of a culture of quality through effective assurance management within their respective roles in higher education institutions.

The training programme is delivered face to face. The content combines topics in leadership and management of quality in a holistic way in order to strengthen the development of higher education institutions and to support the trainees in their endeavour to enhance systematic QA structures. Two workshops will take place in 2024, one in February and one in June, both covering interconnected topics.

The training will be hands-on with a strong practical focus. The workshops will include mixed and interactive methods such as presentations by the experts, peer-learning among the participants, case studies and individual feedback and mentoring.

Institutional Change Projects

All participants of the training are expected to develop and implement a realistic and contextualised institutional change project/ mini-project during the training in order to put theory into practice with the help of a project action plan (PAP). The project, to be initiated after the first workshop in February 2024, will be undertaken over an approximate period of 4 months. Projects are expected to be submitted and be presented at the June 2024 workshop by the participants. During the entire timeframe of the training, participants will receive coaching and mentoring by the experts. Participants should be available and committed to attending and engaging with all the training activities in the programme. Participants will be allowed to choose the project of their choice relevant to accreditation, audit or internationalisation.

The trainees' superiors, the Vice-Presidents (VPs) or Deputy Vice Chancellors (DVCs) in charge of QA, are expected to support their staff in carrying out their projects.

The training is designed for current staff of Higher Education Institutions with responsibilities in different aspects of Quality within their HEIs. It would include staff in leadership, management, deanship, headship roles or quality manager/officer/ representative roles within the HEIs. They should hold at least a Bachelor's degree as recognized from an accredited HEI. Participants should be competent in English communication skills.

The training is supported through funds of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The funds have already been earmarked for the DIES programme. The training expenses will be covered for selected participants. Participants are expected to fund their own transportation costs to attend the workshops.

Participants will be selected through a competitive application process by the members of the organizing committee. At most four participants can be selected per higher education institution.
